Today is Jungs last day at the office. I am going to miss her adorably abrasive personality a great deal.
Since I’m the unofficial Lowe Roche card maker, I made her a card that I felt really suited her.

“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.
— Maurice Sendak

Today Mr. Sendak passed away at the age of 83. He was considered the most important children’s book artist of the 20th century. He is a man that will always be, for me, a huge inspiration. He took the picture book from its warm, safe world and brought it into a dark, and hauntingly beautiful recesses of the human psyche. He paved the way for so many illustrators to follow.

He’s moved on now though- to the land of wild things. May the wild rumpus begin!

Here is a really touching interview of Mr. Sendak from September with Terry Gross of Fresh Air.

Last night I headed to the Horseshoe Tavern to catch Future Islands. Much to my amusement, I got a lot more than I bargained for…
After being rocked almost to sleep by Valleys I was a bit taken aback when Ed Schrader’s Music Beat busted out.
The only way to describe these two guys is Ian Curtis as part of Mclusky with a dash of some Mighty Boosh crimp. If that combo doesn’t sound amazing to you then…. Well, you don’t know anything about the good things in life. The live performance was as scattered as the sound and I think that it’s just the most perfect combination ever.

There are 3 simple steps to seeing how I came to the above conclusion:

Listen to this and then this
Listen to this and then this
Listen to this and then this

So.awesome. This is a live show you really need to see.

“Before Ed Schrader’s Music Beat, the project was just Ed Schrader with a floor tom. A 10” from four years back documents this era. In 2009 Devlin Rice joined Ed for a one-off show. This mind meld took the left field paranoid pop that Ed was composing and added a powerful low end power chug from the jug of eternal rock and raised the whole project a more visceral live experience.”
